Course Overview

What is NJROTC?

NJROTC stands for Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. It is a leadership program designed to give students a head start in life. People who are successful in life often have a strong sense of self-discipline, an ability to lead and motivate others, and a well-rounded character. NJROTC teaches that self-discipline, self-confidence, and other leadership skills that can help you meet life's many challenges regardless of career path.

       What do cadets learn?      

  • Citizenship -- Instill values and responsibilities of good citizenship.
  • Naval Orientation -- A basic introduction to the Navy -- its customs, traditions, and way of life.
  • Naval Operations/Organizations -- Familiarizes the student with national strategy and naval forces, daily military operations, training, exercises, drills, and shipboard organization.
  • Naval History -- History of the United States Navy from the colonial period to the present.
  • Navigation -- An introduction to piloting and celestial navigation.
  • Seamanship -- An introduction to the general subjects of seamanship that include anchoring and mooring, ship handling, small boats, weather, ship construction, and steering and propulsion systems.
  • Leadership -- An ongoing study of the principles and practical application of leadership with emphasis on providing opportunities for students to exercise and develop their own leadership abilities.
  • Nautical Astronomy -- A study of astronomy and its application to celestial navigation.
  • Electronics -- An introduction to electronics as the basis for shipboard radar, sonar, communications, and guidance systems.
  • Oceanography-- Provides information on the collection and dissemination of hydrographic and navigational data of the world's ocean systems.
  • Drills, Commands, and Ceremonies -- Includes individual, squad, platoon, and company close order drill; rotation of command; physical fitness; personnel inspections; and parade in company review.

 Who gains from NJROTC?

You do! The focus of the NJROTC program is on you. This program will give you the oppertunity for self-improvement in many ways. Learning military skills is an excellent ways to learn self-discipline, teamwork, and cooperation. Success in military skills will give you confidence and pride in a job well done. Also, you will be given the oppertunity to participate in community service projects that will encourage your development as a citizen. Successful completion of the NJROTC program allows entry into the armed forces at up to two pay grades higher than enlistees without JROTC experience. With complete dedication and hard work, cadets fulfill their highest expectations and dreams.

 What activities are involved?

Being a cadet is not all work. Corona cadets may attend dining-outs and military balls sponsored by the unit, perform in school assemblies as part of a color guard or drill team, compete in sports days and field meets against other NJROTC units, attend community service events, conduct Memorial Honor Detail services, visit naval bases, live on board a navy ship, and much more. Select cadets will also have the oppertunity to participate in mini boot camp, S.E.R.E. school, sail academy, and leadership academy.

  What is expected out of the cadets?

As a cadet in the NJROTC program, you will be expected to live up to the core values of the Navy, which are Honor, Courage, and Commitment.

Honor - I am accountable for my personal behavior. I will be mindful of the privilege I have to serve my fellow NJROTC cadets and classmates.

Courage - I will strive to maintain the moral and mental strength to do what is right, with confidence and resolution, even in face of temptation or personal adversity.

Commitment - I will work with my fellow cadets as a team to improve the quality of our unit, our classmates, and ourselves.

 What is the cost?       

Dedication, Motivation, and Determination. The Navy provides all books and uniforms at no cost to the students. No cadet is under any obligation to join the armed services upon graduation.

Who can join?  

To be eligible for enrollment in the Corona HIgh NJROTC Program, a student must:

  • Be physically qualified to participate fully in the physical education program.
  • Be selected by the NJROTC instructor with the approval of the school principal.
  • Maintain acceptable standards of academic achievement and an academic standing that warrants at least normal progression leading to graduation.
  • Maintain acceptable standards of conduct.
  • Comply with specified personal grooming standards

How can I join?    

If you are interested in becoming a NJROTC cadet, go ask your guidance counselor to sign you up for Naval Science and come talk to the Senior Naval Science Instructor Lt. Commander Herbka or the Naval Science Instructor First Sergeant Zinn. Let the adventure begin!
